TRAILS Kayaker’s Cove Trip: An Exciting Adventure!

June 21, 2010 by sewardtrails · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Announcement

IMG_1668 (4)TRAILS participants from Soldotna, Homer and Seward had an incredible three-day trip across the Bay at Kayaker’s Cove June 14th-16th. The group hiked the great trail, kayaked the beautiful waters around the Cove (despite the rain), ate wonderful food, soaked up some heat in the sauna and enjoyed wonderful company and games while relaxing in the lodge.

This trip commemorated the late TRAILS Coordinator Tom Beatty from Homer, who died in a float plane accident in 2007. Tom was instrumental in creating the TRAILS “One Hit Wonder” overnight trips, such as the Kayaker’s Cove Trip and forged some incredibe bonds within the TRAILS program; always stretching society’s perceptions of what people with disabilities can do. After two solid days of hard rain on the trip, everyone gathered to talk about Tom the evening of day two. In her reflection on who Tom was, Tiffany Swartz said “if other people are like stars, Tom was like the sun. He really radiated light and made you want to be around him.” Oddly enough, not long after this the rain stopped and soon the gorgeous sun came out; transforming the flat water into a layer of shimmering diamonds and illuminating the mountains across the Bay. Tom’s presence was palpable and everyone felt compelled to get up and out of the lodge. We built a camp fire, made smores, and launched the kayaks for a late night paddle, all in honor of Tom!

The rains returned for day three so we wrapped our trip up with a soggy paddle in the morning, and said our good byes as the Miller’s Landing water taxi brought us back to civilization. TRAILS would like to extend a huge bundle of thanks to Rick, Michelle, Lynzy, Joel, Jaime, Glenn and Jimmy of Adventure 60 North kayak guiding for making this trip affordable for everyone and for sharing their wonderful skills and attitudes that made this trip the success that it was. It is clear from this incredible adventure that even though not everyone knew Tom Beatty, his inspiring legacy lives on.

IMG_1641 (3)One other unique aspect of this trip was that it utilized some new adaptive equipment made by Neptune Inventions and donated to Adventure 60 North by the TRAILS Program. The side-by-side stabilizer bar transforms two double kayaks into an extremely stable catamaran-style rig. (See photo left.) The stabilizer is ideal for people with balance issues, folks nervous about tipping, or paddling in rougher waters. It was a wonderful addition to the trip and allowed people who had never paddled before to enjoy the beautiful waters first hand. For more information on this equipment, or to try it out yourself, contact Adventure 60 North at 224-2600.

The TRAILS program promotes fun, safe, adaptive, inclusive recreation for people of all abilities. To get involved with the TRAILS program, please call 224-8711, or email Emily at sewardtrails@peninsulailc.org.

New Assistive Technology Demo Site!!!

April 5, 2010 by sewardtrails · Comments Off
Filed under: Announcement

ILC Logo-SmallThe Independent Living Center in Soldotna has created a demonstration center that displays different assistive technologies to assist people with various disabilities. The AT Demo Site has tools to assist people with a wide range of disabilities to do things they thought they could no longer do. These tools are important in many activities that we do daily, whether that is in the home, at work or in an educational setting.
Many people, young and old, disabled and not, are not aware of what tools or services are available that can significantly improve their lives or allow them to do a task with more ease and efficiency. Sometimes this technology can be expensive or has to be ordered from a catalogue. This makes it very hard to know which item to purchase without trying it out. And that is why we started the AT Demo Site. The goal is to provide a Center for folks to have hands on experience with the equipment and find out what is available before purchasing something that might not be a good fit for them. We would like to be able give the consumer a general idea of what might be a good match for them. So we can show what equipment we have and how it works, we can talk about what has worked for others with similar difficulties and we can even help you learn how to use the tools and technology if you need.
Assistive technologies span a huge spectrum of cost and complexities and can be something as simple and affordable as a lid opener for $2.00 up to a video magnifier for $1,000. Some other examples of assistive technologies are talking watches, magnifiers, screen-enlarging systems, book players, amplified phones, assistive listening devices, alert systems and computer access software. Often time’s even one simple piece of assistive technology can make all the difference in someone’s life making it more possible to live independently in their homes and communities.
The Independent Living Center also offers tips and resources for everyday tasks such as matching clothes, identifying money or a button on the microwave for folks with low vision. Learning new techniques for doing familiar tasks can assist people in feeling more independent.
We have several catalogues that are available where you can purchase the assistive technology or just peruse to see if anything looks helpful to you. And of course we have internet access where we can search for items not in catalogues. We also may know of an organization or resource for financial assistance in getting the assistive technology that you need.
The AT Demo Site is located in Soldotna though we will be offering clinics and trainings around the Peninsula if there is an interest. The AT Demo Site will continue to grow as the need and funding arises. Anyone in the Seward area who is interested in visiting the AT Demo Site in Soldotna can call 907-262-6333. If you can’t make it to Soldotna call the Seward office at 224-8711 and we can work on a solution; whether we bring a few pieces of assistive technology down here or take a look at the assistive technology items we have locally.
Some of the other services we offer for persons with low vision include: referral for a no-cost evaluation with a Low Vision Specialist from the Alaska Center for Blind and Visually Impaired, assistance in applying for talking books library service or obtaining toll-free operator assistance, and education about low vision and/or visually impaired. Training in cane use and orientation and mobility is also a possibility through ILC. There are many other services available as well all aimed at promoting independence and quality of life for persons and families experiencing disability. Please call with any questions!
