Beware: 511 Info May Not be Accurate
The 511 info posted yesterday on their phone message system was completely inaccurate for both the Seward Hwy mile 110 accident and the Road construction by Summit Lake. The 511 website was not much better. The 511 phone system still had the April Crown Point Bridge construction and Portage Rock slide listed as closures on the main greeting. I contacted DOT and they were very embarrassed about this and promptly removed the April message. The 511 website post said to expect up to 1 hr delays from 8pm to 9am Sun-Fri at Summit because of the use of a pilot car. That was also incorrect. I had a pilot car twice outside of these times yesterday, a 30 min delay the first time and 90 min delay the second time, although that delay was much longer due to the amount of traffic because of the road closure. I expressed my disappointment to DOT and Jill Thompson promptly replied, apologized and said they are working on improving the system and she updated the Summit Lake info. She had also replied in April when I posted comments about the the bridge replacement road closure misinformation. She is a very nice lady and am sure she would appreciate hearing about your experiences if you have had any, good or bad. I like the idea of the 511 phone and web service but it is only valuable if it is accurate and people use it. Here is Jill’s contact info that was posted on the 511 website for questions/comments: Jill Sullivan, ADOT&PF (907) 465-8592 or e-mail: CARS@dot.state.ak.us
