Fingerstyle Guitarist Rick Brooks to Perform at Resurrect Art April 12

April 4, 2013 3:06 pm0 comments
Rick Brooks, Guitarist

Rick Brooks will perform fingerstyle guitar at the Resurrect Art on Friday, April 12 at 7 pm.

Anchorage guitarist Rick Brooks will perform a solo concert at the Resurrect Art Coffeehouse on Friday, April 12 at 7 pm. Brooks is an accomplished fingerstyle guitarist with a background in British folk and American blues. He has studied with Duck Baker and performed with such guitar luminaries as John Renbourne, Laurence Juber, and Mike Dowling. He performs and teaches in Anchorage and is a perennial instructor at the Acoustic Alaska Guitar Camp.

In addition to his evening performance, Brooks will be at Seward Elementary school for some classroom visits on Friday. His appearance is being coordinated as part of the culmination of this year’s Seward Elementary Guitar Club, an extracurricular club coordinated by teacher Terri McKnight and volunteer Jim Pfeiffenberger. “I love to bring someone like Rick into the Guitar Club to demonstrate to the kids where they could go with this instrument if they stick to it,” says Pfeiffenberger. “The Seward Arts Council was kind enough to sponsor an evening concert while he is here. He’s really probably the premier fingerpicker in all of Alaska.” Admission to the Friday evening concert will be $10.00 per person.

Brooks will also be offering a two and a half hour guitar workshop on Sunday, April 14 that will cover developing fingerstyle skills. An intermediate knowledge of guitar is recommended for participation in the workshop. Contact Jim Pfeiffenberger at pfeiff@gci.net for details on the workshop.

Seward Chooses Respect

April 3, 2013 11:41 am4 comments

Choose respect 1About 40-45 Seward community members turned out for the Governor’s “Choose Respect” Rally on March 28th. Officers from the Seward Police Department and Alaska State Troopers also were there, as well as a long time Spring Creek correctional officer, Kenai Peninsula Borough Assemblymember, and a couple of young children.

Marianna Keil, Seward city councilwoman and Legislative Information officer briefly addressed the group, along with Rachael Bylsma special assistant to the Governor’s offices. Similar events took place in communities across Alaska to mark the importance of efforts to tackle Alaska’s high levels of rape, physical and sexual assault and domestic violence.

“It was an awesome day and the weather was perfect at the start of our rally,” said Dawn McDevitt, the DVSA Coordinator for SeaView Community Services.

High energy, unique skills demonstrated at NYO meet

March 24, 2013 3:59 pm0 comments

More than 100 NYO participants were in Seward Friday March 22nd through Sunday, March 24th to compete in Qutekcak Native Tribe’s Third-Annual Seward Native Youth Olympic Invitational , coordinated by Melanee Stevens.

Everyone watched with awe as Conner Floyd, a Senior NYO teenager from the Burchell team was carried 436 feet, circling a little more than twice around the track as he hung from his wrist from a wooden pole. Seward NYO’s Diane German, a sophomore, made it an impressive 230 feet in the wrist carry. Cheers were as hearty for those who made it a great distance as for those who tried, but fell off just a second after being lifted. That’s the spirit of NYO. In what other sport do opponents who had competed with all their strength moments earlier lean over and give one another big, heart-felt hugs? At NYO, the support and encouragement of one’s own team members, members from visiting teams, and coaches is what it’s all about.

NYO teams included the Kenaitze, Chickaloon, Ninilchik, Alaska Native Heritage Center, Burchell (Wasilla) and Seward Qutekcak. There were about a dozen independents too.  Somewhat fewer teams than expected participated due to an NYO mini-meet event in the Valley, Stevens said. But the spirit and energy expressed was extremely high, even on the last day, Sunday, although everyone had competed until 10:00 p.m. on the previous night. Even when they broke for lunch Sunday, the gym filled with dozens and dozens of children from Kindergarten to high school, racing around, dancing and playing tag. Nobody wanted to leave–not even for an hour.

March 19, 2013 2:29 pm0 comments

PRESS Release:
Seward, Alaska, March 19th, 2013— The Seward Chamber of Commerce, Conference and Visitors Bureau announces that applications for the 86th Annual Mount Marathon Race® are currently being accepted.
Runners hoping to race in 2013 must submit their completed application by Midnight on March 31, 2013. Applications can be completed online at www.seward.com. Application fees are $65 for adults and $25 for juniors. Veterans and 2012 finishers have priority, with the remaining slots filled through a lottery system. Lottery results will be announced by mid-April 2013.
The Mount Marathon Race®, as folklore tells it, began as a casual bet between two sourdoughs. The race became an organized event in 1915 and has grown in popularity since, becoming one of the most well loved aspects of the July 4th Celebration in Seward.
The second oldest foot race in the country, The Mount Marathon Race® consists of a grueling 3,022 foot climb over rocks, roots, cliffs and waterfalls. Runners experience a spectacular view over Resurrection Bay, but only briefly, before hitting the turn around point and racing down to the crowd packed Forth Avenue and that magical finish line!
For more information, refer to www.seward.com or contact the Seward Chamber of Commerce at 907-224-8051; PO Box 749, Seward, Alaska, 99664.
