2010 Seward Music And Arts Festival

Hello All Fellow Seward Folk,
It’s that time again. Time to dust off the month of September on your calendars. Find the last weekend, Fri thru Sun. Get out a pen, aim it the spot and start scribbling furiously. Write down in large letters things like; “super important”, “do not touch”, “set aside”, “no work”, “cancel everything for the Seward Festival”. Any of these will work, but make sure to take the days off for the Seventh Annual Seward Music and Arts Festival. This is our first call out to the general public, and we’ll be having more as we get closer to the event itself. So, keep your eyes and ears peeled. Our website: www.sewardfestival.com.
There are some awesome things in store for this year. I’m not going to tell you just yet, cause that would be like telling you what you’re getting for Christmas. But trust me, the planning team has some amazing stuff in store. The dates are September 24-26th. Keep checking the SMAF website for new updates each week.

See You In September, Mark T.
(unless I see you before that)

The Old Believers – This Thursday

It’s right around the corner everyone! The Old Believers in concert, this Thursday. You don’t want to miss it. It’s going to be a blast. There is limited capacity at the RAE Building, so make sure you get a good seat.

Doors Open At 7:00, show starts 7:30pm
Tickets $15; $10 Seward Arts Council Members

Come see The Old Believers. Originally hailing from Alaska and now planted in Portland, OR. The two person nucleus of Keeley Boyle and Nelson Kempf have strung together a nine person ensemble that’s sure to be beyond compare.

Some weblinks of interest:

Some press worth reading:

PopMatters gave The Old Believers’ Eight Golden Greats an “8”. “The Old Believers have built a cozy, comfortable world—strange but at the same time utterly familiar—and it’s one where you want to spend more time,” writes Maura Walz.

The Old Believers truly succeed in creating old timey yet modern sounding pop songs out of sampled industrial bings and bongs paired with some mysterious synth, guitar, and moonlight. Though the songs are beautifully written, these tunes could easily fade to the back of my mind if it were not for this masterful arranging and production. One thing’s for sure, Nelson Kempf and Keeley Boyle have definitely made a believer out of me. – yet more positive presssm poster

1st Annual Moustache Roulette

Got whiskers? Can ya grow a beard? Me too!

Do you have a taste for the thrill of victory? Does flirting with the agony of defeat pique your interest? Like some good ol fashioned competition? Into games of chance? Do you like helping out local causes? Got a beard? Well here’s the scoop all you local hirsute types… Get a beard! Earn the glory! The glory of victory and a scrape with shear doom (no pun there) at the first ever Moustache Roulette, here in Seward! “What is a Moustache Roulette contest?”, you ask. Well allow me to shed some light on this often unheard of and misunderstood creature. It’s a cross between russian roulette, a visit to the barber shop, spin the bottle, and a magnum p.i. episode (minus the cool car and flowery button down shirts). You get a bunch of contestants (dudes with beards) in a room, give em a beer or two, get em around a table and spin a cordless beard trimmer. The trimmer stops and that ‘loser’ has to shave it all down to an attractive moustache shape, sip some beer, laugh a lot, and repeat process. Only one man gets outta there with his facial hair. BUT, , , everyone is a winner. Tentatively the date is set for the 5th of May. Whoa wait. That’s Cinco de Mayo. Yep. All the more fun. Location selection is still in the works but slated for a local social imbibement establishment yet to be named. No entry fees, just come with a beard. Spectators may be allowed to vote or bid on which ’stache the contestant has to carve from his facial forest. At the moment there are two confirmed contestants: Josh Thomas, and Yours Truly (Mark T.). Let me tell you. I’m worried, that J.T. can really grow a mean beard. Moneys raised from the 1st Annual M.R. go toward the Seward Music Festival. Contestants must be 21 or older, preferably with beard growing skills. More Info to be posted here soon. Seward New Year’s Eve Statehood Ball

Seasons Greetings Seward! It’s funny how this particular time of year is supposed to embody relaxation and time spent with family, and how it really translates into, “run your butt off between here anchorage, the post office, gift shops, and stuck in traffic until you’re dizzy/half crazed and succumb to Holiday Madness!!” Well stop chewing on the steering wheel, we want the dream of rest and relaxation to truly come true for you, the holiday warrior hero. The Seward Arts Council’s Music Fest Team is putting all of the finishing touches on the 2009 New Year’s Ball to be held at the ARRC Cruise Ship Terminal. All you have to do is show up, boogie down and help us toast the dawn of yet another new year here in The GreatLand!
We clean up after so you don’t have too. No sinks full of dishes, no turkey or ham coma to struggle with. This is a turnkey operation, unlike that annual replay of dad’s ‘turkey operation’ at family dinner table.
Anyway, if you want to buy advance ticket go to any of these handy locations: Sea Bean Cafe, Ranting Raven, Resurrect Art, Cover To Cover Books, American Legion, Chamber of Commerce, APEX Gym, BC Music School. Or at the door. More info at www.sewardfestival.com and/or call Mark at 224-6800 See you there! Salut!

Seward Music Festival

Seward Rocks!

Starry Eyed Greetings to all fellow Seward, Moose Pass, and Alaskan friends of the Seward Music and Arts Festival. Well another year has come and gone again. Not January One, you say? Well, I say. My calendar no longer pivots around January first. It pretty much does celestial brodies around the last weekend of September! Why? Because that’s the stress/excitement focal point for me, the birthing moment. The Music Fest! That’s where the sun’s indefatigable energy comes through magnifying glass, concentrates and burns paper. That when all of those phone calls, junior ulcers, meetings, emails, nail biting deadlines pay for themselves. It’s intense! It’s so intense that no small group can weather it alone. So we come to the crux of my pitch. No, I’m not asking for more alms. I’m paying dues for alms received. All you cool cats who strolled through the doors, milled about, bought something, bought nothing, whatever you did . . . Thanks! You know who you are. You spanned space from far and wide, or not so far and wide to be amazed under Megan’s Big Tree. To all of the businesses that put enough faith in our ability to pack ‘em in and gave us a part of your bottom line, we hope we did your names and contributions justice. Thank You! You know who you are. Businesses and individual donors both inauspicious and otherwise! It all ads up for us and we count our lucky stars. To the plethora of arts vendors, be it your food art or your fine art, you amaze and inspire the booth wandering browser with your creativity! To you the fine entertainers, from here and there, you are the engine. Putting it on the stage, on the line in front of us. For us! Bringing divine interstellar sounds to our small hamlet for that sweet phase of the fall when we’re coming down from the summer hubris.
From charter companies, to B&B’s, from stage hand to muralist to committee crew, from granparents to grandkids, and all colors, flavor, and varieties of people in between that helped make this year’s festival, to date, the brightest one in the fall sky I say Thank You! – Mark Teckenbrock

p.s. To see names in lights go to www.sewardfestival.com and look on the sponsors page!!
