Avast me hearties!

The Make a Splash @ Your Library summer reading program at Seward Community Library ended with an enjoyable pirate party on Aug. 7th. The library staff would like to thank all who individuals and organizations whose help made the Splash program possible.

Two organizations helped tremendously. Thanks to the Alaska Sea Life Center for the wonderful programs and many tickets that were donated as registration incentives and raffle prizes. Thanks also to the Friends of the Library organization whose donation underwrote many of the other supplies needed.

Thanks to Crista Mclain who not only loaned the library her red-eared sliders but also made many visits down to the library to tend to them. We also appreciate Walker McKnight’s loan of various sea creature figures.

Both Sue Lang of the USCG Auxiliary and Luke Rosier of the National Park Service came to the library this summer to put on a children’s program. We appreciate your willingness to volunteer your time and knowledge.

Finally, thanks to these volunteers who helped out at various times during the summer: Jolund Luther, Ryan Reynolds, Autumn Young, Hannah Zemach-Stovall, Hunter Broughton, Maranda Clark, and Laurie Morrow. Thanks for giving your time to the library and the kids of Seward.

Museum to Host Founders’ Day Open House

The Resurrection Bay Historical Society will hold its annual Founders’ Day Open House at the Seward Museum, at the corner of Third and Jefferson, on Saturday, August 28th from noon to 5 p.m.  This year is the 107th anniversary of the founding of Seward. There will be birthday cake, refreshments and door prizes, given away every half hour.

The story of Seward’s founding begins in 1902 when the Alaska Central Railway chose Resurrection Bay as the site for a seaport for its proposed railroad to the interior of Alaska and the railroad’s organizer John Ballaine, who chose the name of Seward for the new town.  The name was bestowed in honor of William H. Seward, the Secretary of State who negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867.

On August 16, 1903 the wooden steamer Santa Ana left Seattle for Resurrection Bay with 35 settlers, 25 railroad employees, 14 horses, a pile driver, a sawmill, other supplies, and equipment.  Twenty- three Valdez residents joined the group when the Santa Ana stopped there. The Santa Ana entered Resurrection Bay the morning of August 28, 1903 and the passengers, horses, supplies, and equipment were unloaded that afternoon at the bottom of what is now known as Fifth Avenue.  The next day the founders started building the new town, a dock, and a railroad.

Come by the Seward Museum on Founders’ Day or beforehand to learn more about the founding of Seward!

Amnesty at the Library

amnesty - n. - the act of an authority (or your local library) by which pardon is granted to a large group of individuals

April is synonymous to amnesty at Seward Community Library.  Starting Monday, April 5th we will be forgiving all overdue fines.  So start digging under the couch, behind the TV, and within your bedside table for those long overdue items you knew you couldn’t return until this grace period arrived.  Be sure and bring your money, too.  Not for fines, but for our book sale that opens the very same day.  Now you can pile up more book and movies for yourself to replace those items you returned! But hurry… this window of opportunity closes after April 30th has passed.  Remember: bring your items, be pardoned; bring your money, find deals.
