Providence Seward Radiology News
Providence Seward’s Radiology Department has been awarded a three year term of accreditation in Mammography as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR, headquartered in Reston, VA, awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualifications of personnel and adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings to the ACR’s Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.
The ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic and interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, and nuclear medicine and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

Providence Seward Medical Center Winter Health Tip
The physicians at Providence Seward Medical & Care Center have seen quite an increase of injuries due to the icy conditions Seward is currently experiencing. They would like to remind the community to please be cautious while working and traveling during this icy time of year as injuries from falling can be quite serious.
Safety reminders:
Wear outdoor footwear when outside. The soles of outdoor footwear are better able to grip the ice than indoor or dress shoes.
Use ice grippers/spikes with your shoes. A variety of different kinds of adjustable ice grippers are available that slip on over your shoes and are sold locally. Prices vary.
Do the “Seward Shuffle”. Give yourself extra time to walk where you are going so you can do so at a slower pace. Also use caution while walking pets on icy trails and sidewalks as they can easily pull you into slipping and falling.
Spread gravel, sand or alternate traction materials on your driveways, porches and other outside areas of traffic around your home (path to the wood pile, etc). It may be messy but could save you a trip to the ER with serious injury.
Be aware that a dusting of snow may be a deceiving cover for an icy patch. Take your time walking across a known ice patch even if it’s covered with new snow.
Use caution while doing outside winter activities such as skiing and hiking. The trails may be white but they are super icy and hard at this time.
Please drive safely and be aware of the traffic, pedestrians and wildlife around you. Remember to keep a safe distance between yourself and the vehicle ahead while drving on icy roads.
These are just a few safety tips for staying injury-free while working and traveling during periods of super icy conditions. If you do experience injury from a fall or slipping, do not hesitate to make a clinic appointment (224-5205) or visit to the Emergency Room if you need immediate medical assistance.

Providence Seward Medical and Care Center Conducts Survey to Assess Community Health Needs
Seward, AK – Applied Survey Research, on behalf of Providence Seward Medical and Care Center, will be conducting a community health assessment for 2008. The purpose of the assessment is to produce a comprehensive health report to inform the community and to help PSMCC develop an action plan to address the most critical health issues facing the Seward area. PSMCC will use face-to-face interviews to collect community input. The face-to-face interviews will take place on “Survey Saturday” March 8, 2008 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Volunteers will conduct the survey at local community gathering places – the post office, grocery store, etc. The brief survey will ask community members about their health concerns, experiences, and access to health care. If asked to participate in the health assessment survey, community members are encouraged to take a few minutes to share their views. Results of the survey are critical to assist in addressing the health needs of the Seward area.
Volunteers are needed to assist with the survey. Training will be held at PSMCC in the Phoenix Room on Saturday, March 8 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., and then administer the survey in teams of two from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. If interested in volunteering, contact Rebekah Riley at 224-2836.
