Free Red Cross Shelter Management Class 2/22/13

The American Red Cross is hosting a shelter management class in Seward Friday, February 22. The class is designed for anyone that may be a volunteer at an official shelter in the event of a disaster, or for those who may be responsible for sheltering groups of people in a disaster such as day care and elder care facilities.

The class will be Friday February 22, 12 Noon – 5 pm at the Seward Mountain Haven. There are still a few spaces left. To reserve a space in the class or for more information, please contact Dan Nelson, KPB Office of Emergency Management by e-mail at dnelson@borough.kenai.ak.us or by calling (800) 478-4441 ext. 2098. There is no charge to attend this valuable training.

Home owner’s occupied residence exemption for the following–
Senior Citizen Exemption: Requires a one-time filing by the owner of record and remains in effect until ownership, occupancy or eligibility changes. Applicant must be 65 years of age or older before January 1 of the filing year (or surviving spouse age 60 or older). Proof of age (i.e., birth certificate) must be provided at time of initial filing. To qualify for exemption the applicant must be eligible to receive a PFD. All recipients who do not receive a PFD will be required to re-apply annually. Exempts up to $300,000 of assessed value.

Disabled Veteran Exemption: Requires a one-time filing by the owner of record and remains in effect until ownership or occupancy changes. The applicant must have a service-connected disability rated at 50% or more by the Veterans Administration. Verification of disability rating must be submitted annually. Exempts the value of the primary residence and residential use of land. Applications for the Senior Citizen or Disabled Veteran Exemptions must be delivered to the Assessor’s Office, or postmarked on or before FEBRUARY 15, 2013. Applications are available at Borough Offices in Soldotna, Homer and Seward. Forms are also available for printing from the web: http://www.borough.kenai.ak.us/assessingdept

or call the Assessor’s Office (907) 714-2230 – toll free within the borough 1-800-478-4441.
You can also get forms and file at the Borough’s Seward office in the Sea View Plaza Monday through Thursday from 10:00 to 3:00 or call Cheryl at 224-2001. Because the deadline falls on Friday, and the Seward office is closed, there will be forms outside the office door for your convenience. Please be advised that you must have your envelope hand stamped by 2/15/13 to qualify for the exemption.

Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Mike Navarre will be visiting Seward on Wednesday, February 13. He will be available for informal discussion and questions with community members from 10:00 am until noon and from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, at the Seward Annex, in the Seaview Plaza, 302 Railway Avenue, Suite 122. Mayor Navarre welcomes input, insights and discussion on issues that affect the Seward area, including surrounding communities, as well as the Kenai Peninsula Borough. He will be joined by the Kenai Borough’s Human Resources Director, Stormy Brown.

Individual appointments and times may be scheduled by calling Michele Aranguiz in the mayor’s office at 714-2157.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough (KPB) is finalizing its selection of state lands to be transferred to the borough under the Municipal Entitlement Land Grant. KPB is seeking public input to identify lands of local importance that should be considered to fulfill the 28,000 acres of our remaining land entitlement. These lands could be designated for community expansion and public purposes such as a school, fire station, transfer site, cemetery, residential subdivision, public open space, firewood site, commercial or industrial areas or a number of additional land uses. We want to hear from you, please take this opportunity to provide us your input!

Tuesday January 15th is the last day to apply for Homeowner’s exemption, Volunteer EMS, Firefighter, exemption, Disabled Veteran and Disabled Resident exemption. These must be postmarked 1/15/13. Our very, very cool Library is looking great! It’s workers and elves have stocked many of the shelves. I am soooooooo excited. I can’t wait to check out my first book from our new Library. Thank you to the many, many folks who have worked so hard, for so many years to bring this about. What a great new year’s gift to Seward. :)

Well Water Testing

“For anyone on a well who chooses to have the water tested, Tauriainen Engineering & Testing in Soldotna has provided test kits and can do testing.  The kits and instructions are available for pickup at the Borough Annex in the Sea View Plaza Building from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. October 8th, 9th, and 10th.   Samples dropped off at the Borough office by noon on those days will be transported to the lab in Soldotna by the Borough.   The cost is $39.00 per sample, and payment must accompany the sample.  Checks or money orders should be payable to Tauriainen Engineering. 

 

Anyone with questions on when wells can be tested or on the specifics of the test should contact Taurianen Engineering at 262-4624 or DEC in Soldotna at 262-3420.”

Water Test Kits Available

For anyone on a well the borough has provided water test kits. It takes a week to prepare your well for testing AFTER the water levels have settled. You can pick up your kit at the Borough office in the Sea View Plaza building from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Thursday. The test is a “TOTAL COLIFORM BACTERIA DRINKING WATER ANALYSIS.”

      Beginning Monday, October 8, you can return your bottle to our office by noon; we need same day testing. The office will open at 8:00 AM next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We will be collecting samples Monday at noon, Tuesday at noon and Wednesday at noon (October 8-10). The Borough will then deliver the sample to the lab. The cost is $39.00 check or money order with the sample.

For Seward’s interest the Assembly seat for the East Peninsula is open and Seward Bear Creek Flood Service Area Board has three vacant seats open and Bear Creek Fire Service Area Board has three seats open. The Assembly did vote in favor to open all the Seward Bear Creek Flood Service Area seats to everyone in the service area. There are three seats open. Consider serving! The Assembly will vote on August 7th to change the Seward Bear Creek Flood Service Area seats to all inclusive as opposed to a certain number from the city of Seward and a certain number from outside the city limits.
