History program looks at boats that delivered the mail

Historian and author Penelope Goforth is featured speaker for this month’s “Thursdays: Our History” program sponsored by Resurrection Bay Historical Society. Goforth will talk about the mailboats SS Dora and SS Starr, which sailed the waters from Seward to Unalaska almost a century ago with the mission of delivering mail to people living in the “Westward” communities of Alaska.
The program gets under way at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 21 in the community room of Seward Community Library Museum.

RBHS also reminds people of the annual Summer Solstice Cemetery Tour later that evening starting at 10:30 p.m. in the Legion Cemetery just west of the Chamber of Commerce office. Lee Poleske, assisted by Sue McClure, will lead the tour, which takes participants to various gravesites where Poleske will share historical information about the deceased. This year’s theme is “Accidents.”
