Registration Now Open for the 2018 Mount Marathon Race

Seward, AK—It may be hard to believe in the midst of Alaska’s winter conditions, but one of the state’s most iconic summer events started generating momentum today.

Registration is now open for the 91st running of the Mount Marathon Race. Runners from all over the world were waiting at the stroke of midnight on March 1 to claim their race spot or try their luck as a lottery applicant.

“The fact that runners from Seward to Australia are hovering over their computers at midnight, waiting for the very first chance to register, is a reflection of how important this race is to people,” said Cindy Clock, executive director of the Seward Chamber of Commerce.

There are two primary pathways for runners seeking a place at the starting line.

Priority racers—generally speaking, the top 225 finishers from the previous year’s event—are guaranteed a spot if they register by March 31. Race veterans who have completed 10 or more races are also assured a coveted spot if they register in time.

Runners who do not qualify for priority status, including those who have never run Mount Marathon, must apply for entry via the race lottery. That process also closes on March 31. Lottery winners will be announced in early April on the race website.

More background on the Mount Marathon Race, including entry requirements, the course, and historical race data, can be found on the race website.
