Proposed Use of PTA Funds for Seward Bike Park Vote February 13

We are seeking member input on a proposal to use up to $10,000 from the Seward PTA Elementary School Fund for the Seward Bike Park project.  We plan to vote on the issue at our next meeting on Tuesday, February 13th at 6:30pm in the Seward Elementary School Library.

About the fund:

The PTA Elementary School Fund currently has a balance of $47,480.  This money was raised over many years through the kids’ annual fall fundraiser (Innisbrook/Believe/Nature Vision).  PTA’s practice has been to use half of the funds raised each year for current projects (field trips, technology purchases, etc.) and to save the other half for a “big” project.  The idea for a big project had been to build a covered play area at the school, but that idea was scrapped after a committee determined the project unfeasible due to high cost.

The Seward Bike Park project consists of building a pump track, skills course and short single-track loop.  A potential site has been identified at an existing but defunct bike park (Bittick BMX Park) on city land near the Forest Acres Campground.  Similar parks have been built around the state, including the Palmer Bike Park which can be seen here http://www.ptarmiganptrails.com/trail-portfolio/palmer-bike-park/

A bike park would provide another fun, healthy outdoors activity for our community, youth and adults alike, which is part of PTA’s mission.  Our plan for the project is similar to how the Seward community waterfront playground was built – a grassroots effort using grants, sponsorships and volunteer/in-kind labor.
