History program on Feb. 22 takes look at Harding Icefield crossings

Colleen Kelly will be featured speaker for this month’s “Fourth Thursdays: Our History” program on Thursday, Feb. 22 at the Seward Community Library and Museum.

Her talk will look into the numerous efforts over the years to cross the Harding Icefield. It’s been nearly 50 years since Yule Kilcher, Vin Hoeman and others successfully crossed the icefield in April 1968. Many believe the publicity surrounding their achievement led to the eventual creation of Kenai Fjords National Park in 1980. Despite the celebrity surrounding that 1968 effort, there are other expeditions with an interesting story to share as well.

The program, which starts at 7 p.m. in the community room, is free and open to the public. The monthly “Fourth Thursdays” series is sponsored by Resurrection Bay Historical Society.
