Alaska State Troopers Official Report on Officer Involved Shooting Early Oct 1

On Sunday, October 1, 2017, at approximately 0147 hours, an officer with the Seward Police Department (SPD) was involved in a shooting in the Safeway parking lot in Seward.  Initial investigation determined that the Seward Police Officer made a traffic stop and contacted Micah McComas, 41 of Chugiak. During the contact, McComas was shot and subsequently died as a result of his injuries. Next of kin has been notified.


The Seward Police Officer received non-life threatening injuries during the incident. The Seward Police Department requested AST assistance in investigating the incident.  An AST investigator from the Soldotna General Investigation Unit and Troopers from Soldotna and Seward responded to investigate and assist with scene security and documentation. AST has assumed case responsibility to investigate the officer involved shooting.  Once the investigation and reports are complete, it will be forwarded to the Office of Special Prosecution for review.

The name of the officer involved will be released 72 hours from the time of the incident per SPD policy. No further information is available for release at this time.
