Spring Gardening, Composting, and Planting Workshops in Seward

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service will offer four gardening, composting and planting workshops this spring in Seward.

Casey Matney, an agriculture and horticulture agent based in Soldotna, will teach classes from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays at the K.M. Rae Marine Education Building at 201 Railway Ave.

The schedule includes Vegetable Seed Starting and Transplanting, March 14Raised Bed Gardening, March 28Tree Planting and Care, April 11; and Making Compost, May 2.

The seed starting and transplanting class will cover growing medium, light and temperature controls, starting seeds and transplanting. The raised bed workshop will include advantages of using raised beds, tips to make raised beds, and making the most of them. The tree-planting workshop will cover soil preparation, tree placement, planting and tree care.  The making compost class will consider the science and methods of composting, storage and uses for the compost.
