AVTEC Gym will be open to the public sporadically

City LogoSeward Parks & Recreation Department will be opening the AVTEC Gym at 519 Fourth Avenue sporadically while the City moves supplies and recreation equipment back into the customer service window.  Openings will coincide with Adult Basketball League schedules, or every Tuesday and Thursday night from 6 pm to 9 pm.  Activities will include open racquetball, weight rooms, both aerobics rooms and some open gym time before and after league games.  Customers will be required to pay cash until computers and phone lines are installed to process credit card payments.  As posted last spring, Drop-in fees increased to five dollars ($5) per adult.  When available, annual passes will be sold at $300 per person, and no discounts will be offered.

Please like us on Facebook for day-to-day updates at Seward Recreation.

We hope to eventually offer a consistent schedule, which may look like this:

Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays: 8 am to 9 pm.

Wednesdays: 8 am to 2 pm.

Saturday 9 am to 6 pm.

We welcome the public’s input regarding the schedule by way of actively voting by registration and participation.  While closed, SPRD devoted time to analyze the use of the hours and favored programs through Sports & Rec through the AVTEC Gym.  We are making an effort to emphasize favored programs and to staff building uses during peak, public hours in order to provide the best for the most.  To this goal, we have reduced hours from slower days such as Sundays, Mondays and Fridays.

We will work to provide recreation opportunities in other locations on these days, when feasible.  For example, the Teen and Youth Center (TYC) and the Teen Rec Room (TRR) will begin working together to offer Friday evening recreation at their sites or outside.  We will move Racquetball League to Tuesday nights.  Archery begins this Wednesday night in the Alaska Railroad’s Dale Lindsey facility. Youth archery is likely to begin soon in the Middle School, under an entity separate from SPRD.  As always, SPRD will continue to provide other off-site recreation programs such as fun-run races, softball and soccer in the summer and more.  The recreation volleyball league, Coed Barbecue Volleyball, is already underway each Monday night at Seward Middle School.  Volunteer officials, please contact us.

We plan to continue to host highly popular Urbach’s Youth Basketball League on Saturdays at the AVTEC Gym, January through March.  We are already seeking volunteer coaches, assistant coaches, Team Parent volunteers and officials.  Thank you for your support of this program over the years.

We are seeking a corps of healthy, fit volunteers to move items back into the office.  Sign up or volunteer on Facebook or contact Karin Sturdy, SPRD Director, 224.4053 or
