Mt. Marathon Race Press Release

chamberMt. Marathon Changes Race Registration Period and Adds Fifty Junior Racer Spots for 2017 The Mt. Marathon Race Committee has approved several changes that will take effect in the 2017 Mt. Marathon Race ®.

In the first notable change, registration for the 90 th Mt. Marathon Race ® will begin March 1st and end March 31st, 2017. The registration deadline remains the same, but now racers have only one month, March, to register rather than spanning three months as in recent years.

Secondly, the 9:00 am Junior race will include twenty-five additional spots for Boys and another twenty- five in the Girls division increasing the total number of junior racers from 250 to 300. Committee member Danny Crow said of the change, “Given the popularity of the race, we are always looking for ways to expand participation. We agreed the Junior race can safely handle 50 more young runners.”

The next race of the day begins at 11:00 AM, and the third change is that the last race of the day will be moved up one half hour to 2:00 PM.

The women’s and men’s race start times alternate annually. In even-numbered years the women’s race is the last event of the day and in odd-numbered years the men take the last race of the day.

2017 Start times:

a. Junior Race 9:00 AM

b. Women’s Race 11:00 AM (second wave at 11:05 AM)

c. Men’s Race 2:00 PM (second wave at 2:05 PM)

Holding the last race of the day earlier in the day will allow racers, spectators, and volunteers more time to enjoy Seward in the evening.

The committee wants to remind racers of the long-term rule that shoes with metal cleats are prohibited.

Shoes with metal cleats can cause injury to the hands, faces, and bodies of other racers.

Starting in 2016 the Seward Chamber of Commerce, CVB and City of Seward established a “no pets” policy for July 4th. This new policy was well received by runners, spectators and the community at large.

No dogs, leashed or unleashed, will be allowed in the downtown area or along the race course, including all race trails on the mountain. This provides increased safety for runners and spectators, and reduces problems with sanitation and clean-up.

Thank you to all those pet lovers ~ please plan to leave your pets at home.
