Did you know that 100% of the Kenai Peninsula Borough 3% sales tax goes to education?  Did you know that the sales tax cap of $500 was put in place in 1965?  Did you know that we have the lowest tax cap in the State?  Did you know that we have one of the lowest sales tax rates in the State?   Did you know that well over 50% of  the sales tax collected in Seward are from non – Seward residents?   Did you know that renters pay $35 a month sales tax?

The sales tax proposition will increase the sales tax cap from $500 to $1,000 on a single purchase. What this means is that sales tax is charged on the first $1,000 of the purchase or a maximum of $70. The tax rate of 7% (in Seward) remains that same. You will pay the same amount of sales tax now as you always have on your normal trips to the grocery store, hardware store, and other businesses in town unless the amount is more than $500 (the old cap).   If you spend $250 for groceries your tax is and remains $17.50 in Seward.  If your spend $1500 on a wonderful Seward excursion (like fishing for 4) the total tax would be $70.

The sales tax proposition will also eliminate the “residential renters” sales tax. So no more sales tax on monthly residential rentals, a savings for most renters of $35 a month!!

Please vote yes and bring more sales tax revenues to Seward to help offset the reduction is State revenues and to fund our GREAT Schools.  Have the visitors help pay for the facilities, roads, and parks that they like to enjoy.
