Chamber of Commerce, Fishing

Submitted by Seward Chamber of Commerce –
Welcome to the 61st Silver Salmon Derby. Seward, Alaska, August 15.
The first day of the derby had a pretty good start even if the weather made it challenging for some of the anglers going out into the bay. The derby saw a good variety of silvers coming in to contend for the lead.  The men’s leader was Phil Collins from Sterling bringing in a beauty weighing in at 14.41 pounds and Michele Droege of Anchorage with her 14.47 pounder taking the women’s and overall lead.  For the youth leader, 8 year old Hazel Fuhs out of Anchorage brought in whopping 12.38 pound silver that is definitely something to be proud of.

Derby tickets are $10.00 for a day and $50.00 for the entire derby.  With a derby ticket you can win a tagged fish that can be worth $50,000.00, 2 round-trip tickets from Alaska Airlines or the Derby Double, a 2016 Chevy Silverado and a 2016 Chevy Equinox.  All fifteen fish were tagged earlier this week within Resurrection Bay.  There are daily prizes and different categories that the entire family can participate in.
