Silver Salmon Derby begins August 13

Do you know how to tell summer is coming to an end? Many know by the change in the weather, but in Seward it is the annual Silver Salmon Derby. With the Captain’s kick-off BBQ at the Derby booth on Friday August 12th at 5:30pm to 8:00pm, where captains and vendors come to grab a bite to eat and all they need to participate. Anglers begin to crowd the dock eager to start at 6:00am August 13th and some fish until it ends at 12:00pm August 21st. Many prizes include $10,000 for 1st place, $5,000 for 2nd and $2,500 for third as well as tagged fish worth anywhere from $50,000 to the “Derby Double” a 2016 Chevy Silverado and a 2016 Chevy Equinox. Don’t forget the mystery fish and $1,000 “Yellow Copy” drawing held at the awards BBQ at the Branson Pavilion at 4:00pm August 21st.

As one of the oldest Fishing Derbies in the state of Alaska, this event is revered by anglers all over the world. You can find stories in magazines and newspapers: even hear tales on radio shows. The Seward Chamber of Commerce and the City of Seward are excited for our 61st Silver Salmon Derby and we hope to see you here. Pack up the family and your fishing gear for your chance to take home some Salmon and maybe some Cold Hard Cash.
