SPRD Bulletin August 11

End of season competitive softball league tourney

2014champsSeward Competitive Softball League finished last Sunday with an exciting championship game, with Tony’s Pistols winning the championship.  Congratulations Tony’s Pistols.  Vergeben Services came in as the runner up.  Seward Insurance’s team was awarded the sportsmanship trophy.  There were six teams that competed every Sunday night in June and July.  Each team played a competitive 12 games throughout the season and then were seeded based off their record into a tournament.  They all participated in a bracketed championship tournament and there were very close finishes and exciting come from behind wins.  We are grateful for the athlete’s participation, sportsmanship and heart they put into the season.  Thank you manager’s for passing along very important information to your teammates, and helping organize your teams.  We are grateful for the dedicated and educated umpires and for the time they volunteered to run each game.  Looking forward to a great season for 2015, please send your ideas for next season or 224-4054.

TYC Campers & Staff Photo Day commenced last Friday at 3pm to commemorate 20 years of TYC Summer Day Camps! Campers were encouraged to wear their favorite camp t-shirt. Campers receive a t-shirt in the color of their choice for every 2 weeks of camp they attend. Staff wear coordinated colored shirts each day and the kids have learned the routine and often mimic the staff with the result being a super cute visual representation of TYC when we’re out and about. Keep an eye out for the “Human Highlighters” around town!

Nine TYC Adventure Campers embarked on the Harding Ice Field overnight trip Wednesday, August 6th to Thursday, August 7th. TYC had partnered with the National Park Service to create a Hiking Club that met weekly and hiked increasingly difficult hikes throughout the summer in preparation for this backpacking adventure. Campers spent the beginning of the week working with National Park Service Ranger Luke Rosier to prepare for the journey. Leave-No-Trace ethics, hiking tips and tricks and how to pack a pack were among the topics. Campers and staff also received NPS-led bear spray training last week to further prepare them for this exciting wilderness trip. The cold drizzle didn’t appear to dampen their spirits and highlights as told by the campers included, “tons of sheep,” ptarmigan mom and chicks and exploratory hikes at the top. Adventure Camp is open to 5th-8th graders all summer long. Adventures include baseball games, boat tours in Kenai Fjords National Park, overnight trips to Caines Head, kayaking trips and much, much more! The last week of Adventure Camp is August 11th-15th and includes a kayak tour on Bear Lake as well as a field trip to Nikiski Pool. TYC 224-5472
