Memorial Service for William G. “Jerry” Blair

William G. “Jerry” Blair

October 2, 1932 – August 22, 2014

William G. “Jerry” Blair, 81, of Seward, Alaska passed away on August 22, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.  Jerry was born William Girard Blair on October 2, 1932 in Barton, Vermont to Aime P. and Irene H. (Paquette) Blair.  Jerry grew up on the family farm, with three generations in the house, including five brothers and one sister.  He married Nancy A. Cantlin in Lebanon, New Hampshire on June 30, 1951.  Jerry joined the army in 1953 and served in the Korean War.  After being discharged in 1958, he and Nancy moved to Alaska.  He was an active member of the American Legion for the rest of his life, serving as Post 14 Commander in Petersburg, AK; Southeast Alaska District Commander; and State Department Commander.   He played a major role in forming the Sons of the American Legion squadron of Post 5.  Organizing many parades and banquets, maintaining the cemetery, and performing weekly chores at the Legion were some of his contributions.  Additionally, he was a member of the Elk’s and VFW.

Over the years Jerry called many places home, including Ketchikan, AK; Petersburg, AK; Delray Beach, FL; Kodiak, AK; and finally Seward, AK.  Jerry worked in the vending industry most of his life, and was self-employed in Seward from 1979 to 2002, when he retired.  He was a familiar face at the senior center in Seward, where he enjoyed the company of many friends.  Building projects around his home, gathering with family and friends, and traveling cross-country with Nancy in their RV were ways that he preferred to spend time in his later years.  He always had an entertaining story to tell his grandchildren about events in his life.

Jerry was predeceased by his son Donald Blair; brothers Richard Blair, Robert Blair, Leo Blair; sister Elaine “Sis” Cattabriga; his brothers-in-law Donald Cantlin and John Cantlin; and is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy Blair; sons David Blair and Daniel Blair; daughter Debra Blair Lechner and her husband Charles; grandchildren Brian Blair and his wife Amber, Casey Blair, Brittany Blair, Jennifer Blair Hill and her husband Raleigh, Thomas Blair and his wife Molly, Matthew Blair and his wife Katrina, Anders Blair, Chelsea Lechner Finch and her husband Bill, Charles Lechner and his wife Kassi, Chad Lechner, and Chance Lechner; great-grandchildren Jadon Blair, Kendal Blair, Oliver Hill, Hayden Blair, and Parker Blair; brothers Tom Blair and his wife Mary Ann, and C.G. Blair and his wife Arlene;  sisters-in-law Donna Blair and Joan Blair, Leafie Cantlin, and Nancy Jennings; brothers-in-law James Cantlin and his wife Ellie, and Roger Cantlin; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service, followed by a potluck will be held Saturday, September 6, 2014, at the American Legion Post 5 in Seward from 1 – 4 pm.  In lieu of flowers the family asks any donations in Jerry’s memory be sent to the American Legion Post 5, PO Box 306, Seward, AK 99664.  Condolences can be sent to Nancy and the family at P.O. Box 793, Seward, AK, 99664.
