Matt Hopper & Peter Piek perform at the Res Art July 27

Matt Hopper and German painter/musician Peter Piek will perform at the Res Art on July 27 at 7PM. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Matt Hopper is a singer/songwriter and guitarist for The Roman Candles. He began playing guitar in high school near Hatcher Pass, AK. The Roman Candles has included over 100 members since inception in the late 90s. Hopper maintains a current band in Boise, ID and Anchorage, AK while often using musicians from a diverse variety of music scenes. It would be safe to label Hopper a “north-westerner”. Hopper has been performing original songs for over a decade, and has released over 8 albums of original full length and extended play collections of songs on compact disc. He has warmed up stages for artists as diverse as Dr. John, Everclear, Todd Snider, Gin Blossoms, Young Dubliners, Portugal. The Man, Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights, Barenaked Ladies, Heartless Bastards, Soledad Brothers and toured with Cold War Kids, Kate Earl, Old Believers, The Devil Whale, Drew Grow, Peter Piek, Lucky Fonz III, Dentia Odigie, Kat Jones, Anatomy of a Ghost and many more.

“Peter Piek started to be interested in painting when he was a child. With his grandmother he visited an exhibition in his hometown Chemnitz, there he saw paintings of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Soon he wanted to try the wild strokes of the brush and the vivid colours on his own. At the age of 12 music came along: he played the guitar, piano and drums and toured with several bands, among others “The Colours” – not surprisingly-, and wrote his own songs. He studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig but he stopped after finishing the pre-degree as a protest against art as an institution. Today he lives as a freelance painter and musician in Leipzig and… all over the world. He is always on tour, he has already played more than 500 concerts in Europe, the US and China. As if this wasn’t enough, he wrote three books with Michael Goller, and founded the initiative Malfront and the arts centre PPZK (Peter Piek Zentrum für Kultur).
Since early 2013 he has been on tour with drummer Christian Schönholzer in Italy, Spain, France, Denmark, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland and Germany to present his new album “Cut Out The Dying Stuff”.

Peter Piek´s music is not as abstract as its paintings, it goes straight to the heart of the listener. It might be because of the catchy song structure and the anthem-like refrains or because he is again and again singing about falling in love. ”  – Katrin Haase
