Spring Creek Inmate Death

SpringCreekYardandPerimeterA 29-year old inmate at Spring Creek Correctional Center has died. Eilhu Gillespie was transported to Providence Seward Medical & Care Center in Seward Sunday June 29th early in the morning, where he was pronounced deceased at 2:32 a.m. Soldotna dispatch was first notified of an assault between two cellmates at Spring Creek at 1:29 in the morning, according to Beth Ipsen, a spokesperson for the Alaska State Troopers,. The case is under investigation by Soldotna ABI. His next of kin have been notified. No one has been charged in connection with the incident which is under investigation, Ipsen said. Gillespie had been in House One of the prison. The case of record’s type is listed as “Homicide.”

Last December Spring Creek inmate Jason Rak, 25, attacked another prisoner, Forrest Ahvanka, 48 and left him in critical condition.


In August 2013, 15 Spring Creek inmates trashed their cells and broke sinks and toilets in an outburst that was not controlled until the next morning shift came on, nine hours later.

On October 24th 2012 a group of prisoners overpowered corrections officer Kim Spalding, pinned him down and beat him around the head and body, seriously injuring him as he repeatedly stabbed at two of the inmates.

This is the sixth death reported by those incarcerated in prisons in Alaska this year, and the fifth one since April.
