Applicants who do not qualify for CIT may be eligible for the Leadership Program.

SPRD announces a partnership with local taxi company Seward Taxi (362-8000) whereby free rides are offered to our youth and teen patrons from our SPRD TYC, Rec Room and sometimes Sports & Rec Program at the AVTEC Gym. Students involved in after school sports can receive a ride from the school to the Rec Room for example, and then a ride home. This new program is an experiment offered to regular users of the above, SPRD drop-in programs. This is a trial program from the creative minds of Seward professionals who are members of the Seward Coordinated Transit Group. Seward Independent Living Center (ILC) offers a Taxi Voucher program for qualifying individuals that merits praise and likely this SPRD taxi voucher replica program. The Seward ILC is able to contract with Seward Taxi, the sole company that replied to their original Request for Proposals (RFP.) Seward Taxi then ‘sells’ reduced rate taxi rides to Seward ILC. These vouchers are re-sold to consumers at an even further-reduced rate to qualifying individuals. This all occurs to provide more quality and independent lifestyles for those who need this. The funds the riders pay contributes back to the program. Grant funds are an integral portion of this program, too. For more information on the Seward ILC taxi voucher program, advocacy or their active, T.R.A.I.L.S. program, call the ILC at 224.8711. Parents and teens interested in receiving taxi vouchers for SPRD programs and events should direct in-person questions to SPRD program staff: Maggie Wilkins Cannady, 224-5472, Melanie Hauze, 224-4011 or Shari Adelmann, 224.4057. The SPRD voucher program is designed to be free and easy, no hassle. In the future, SPRD may sell reduced-rate vouchers to recreation participants, like ILC, or may receive additional grant funding. Seward Taxi will compile and report Ride Use statistics and forward to the SPRD and the Seward Coordinated Transit Group. This program will further provide data to the community regarding transit needs. The City of Seward will also soon be finalizing details to resume the free, summer shuttle for cruise ship passengers and that extended program which benefits locals. Seward Taxi can be located via 362.8000. Seward Taxi has vehicles which are certified according to federal standards, which allows them to offer a variety of ride-reimbursement programs such as Medicaid, veterans, ILC and others. Their drivers are also trained, qualified and meet the Seward ILC’s minimum standards such as passing criminal history check, driving check, drug-free, smoke-free and alcohol-free.
