Smoky haze over Seward

Smoke from the Funny River wildfire near Soldotna reached Seward today, changing our beautiful blue sky to a gray haze. The fire has grown to over 20,000 acres, sending smoke to Anchorage, Homer and Seward. The whole Kenai Peninsula is dry and fire danger is high.

44, 434 acres have burned as of Thursday, May 22. According to the website, the fire is only 5% contained and the cause is under investigation. “Firebomber Ducks” that can scoop up to 5000 gallons of water in one pass from nearby Tustumena Lake are due to arrive today from Canada. Check the ‘net for links to videos of these amazing aircraft in use.
