The 2014 “Polar Bear Jump Off, Pink Cheeks Triathlon,” has been the big hit to look forward to for many weeks for the community of Seward and for its hundreds of participants. Sports and Recreation is excited to share the excellent turnout of the Pink Cheeks Triathlon and wants to thank all the athletes that came to compete, improve their past personal records, bringing family, friends, and their great effort, sportsmanship, and encouragement, to give an exciting atmosphere to the triathlon this year!
We want to greatly show our appreciation to our awesome sponsors. Thank you Polar Bear Association! Thank you Seward Volunteer Fire Department! Thank you, Seward High School, Seward Middle School, and Seward Elementary School for the use of your facilities. Thank you to all the community volunteers we are grateful for your time and are thankful for such a great running event. Thank you TYC councils for your help setting up, taking down, and volunteering your time during this successful event! Thank you PW and PMC crews. Thank you for all of you who helped clean after the race. Thank you for you who swept, washed, and graded the trails. Thank you to those who marked the trail and flagged the race to keep our racers safe.
We are excited to report that Jens Beck won the overall individual race with a time of 42:20:31. Jakub Jiracek, Mick Bakker, Fred West, and Chuck DiMarzio rounded out the top five. Congratulations to these five men who also placed top five in the overall male category. Mary Fischer was the top women finisher with a time of 53:48:36. Martha Marlow, Aicha Hull, Isabel Barnwell, and Tekla Seavey finished top five for overall females; congratulations ladies. Isabel Barnwell also was the top finisher for ages 13 to 19.
Top finishers in their age group were: Travis Price(20-29 male), Tekla Seavey (20-29 female), Jakub Jiracek (30-39 male), Martha Marlow (30-39 female), Jens Beck (40-49 male), Mary Fischer (40-49 female), John Helie (50-59 male), Elizabeth Walker (50-59 female), Daniel Hartung (60-69 male), Sarah Kleedehn (60-69 female), and Jon Nauman (70-79 male).
We are excited to announce that team Mirror Lake Marauders (49:47:55), took overall first place in the team event, followed by team Orange Crush (55:05:50), and team Seward Wildflowers (61:33:11). Good job teams. Team Mirror Lake Marauders also won the “youth male” category, and the Seward Wildflowers finished first in the “youth female” category.
In the team race, there were multiple age categories. Team Get Naked (female 18-39), The Scooby Doos (male 18-39), team pK1 (female 40-59), the Beam Team (male 40-59), The 200 Grands (60+), and Dragon (draggin’) Riders (adult coed), all placed first in the age categories that they competed in. Congratulations to all the teams that participated and finished the race!
Fantastic job to the many racers, sponsors, and volunteers and we want to thank you for your participation, competition, sportsmanship and support. Because of your character and participation we had an amazing Pink Cheeks Triathlon that was safe and full of fun.
