31st Annual Great Alaska Sportsman Show Helps Alaskans Plan and Gear Up for Outdoor Adventure

GASS logoANCHORAGE – The snow is only melting slowly, so it’s a bit early for gardening and flowers, but it’s not too early to start planning for summer fun. The place to start is the Great Alaska Sportsman Show, March 27-30 in Anchorage. For the 31st year, more than 500 vendors will pack Sullivan Arena, an outdoor tent, the parking lot and both sides of Ben Boeke Ice Arena for Alaska’s largest trade show. Attend one or more of the 100 free seminars, get the kids over to the Trout Pond, participate in the Bear Aware Scavenger Hunt or take advantage of show-only specials on outdoor gear and services.

“We have seminars for newbies, as well as seasoned Alaskans on every topic – from how to identify a Dall ram and skinning a brown bear to how to filet a fish, build a wood canoe or use a GPS in the wilderness,” said Steve Shepherd, president of Aurora Productions, Inc. “There truly is something for everyone at this year’s show.

The Great Alaska Sportsman Show runs for four full days: Thursday, March 27th from 4 to 9 p.m.; Friday, March 28th from 12 noon to 8 p.m.; Saturday, March 29 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and, Sunday, March 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $11 ($10, plus $1 city tax) for adults, $3 for kids 2-12, free for kids under two and $6 for parking.

Save the parking fee by riding the free Shuttle Express, courtesy of Premier Alaska Tours. Buses run 60 minutes prior to opening and 60 minutes after the show closes each day from Northway Mall.

Other features at the Great Alaska Sportsman Show include a full schedule of seminars led by Fisheries and Game Biologists and others with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. The Alaska Bird Treatment & Learning Center will have daily owl, raptor and bird demos. Fly fishers will want to practice and attend hands-on demos, and kids 12 and under have an opportunity to catch a fish for free in the Kid’s Fishing Pond.

A complete special section, with a list of vendor booths, seminars, informational articles was inserted into the Anchorage Daily News on Sunday, March 23rd, and is available online. For more information about the 2014 Great Alaska Sportsman Show, visit www.greatalaskasportsmanshow.com.
