With near-spring like conditions rapidly reducing snow cover on the Kenai Peninsula, the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge), will soon close to snowmachine use. Deputy Refuge Manager Steve Miller, said that the closure will take place at 11:59 p.m., Sunday, February 2nd. Given the time of the year this closure has taken place, Miller said, there is the possibility that the Refuge could re-open to snowmachining should conditions significantly improve. Although the closure will not occur until Sunday, snowmachine users are cautioned that most stream crossings are currently unsafe and trail conditions are extremely poor. For more information about this snowmachine closure, or other Refuge regulations, please contact the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge office during regular business hours at (907) 262-7021.
