On a balmy, calm and sunny afternoon on Tuesday, local surfer Kirk DesErmia launched his board from Fourth of July Beach into the shore surf. Once out of the waves, he stood up and paddled smoothly over to the river’s mouth to play in the waves, totally immersed. After a bit, he again stood up, paddled down the bay and glided out of sight.
This may seem fairly normal for Alaska SUPing, but I was amazed and impressed that he was wearing shorts as if he were in Hawaii. I guess cold is a frame of mind. Now, with the return of icy cold rain, that magical afternoon seems like a treasured summer memory.
