Retired Seward Fire Chief David Squires and re-elected City Councilmember Christy Terry took the Oath of Office at Monday night’s regular council meeting. Jean Bardarson, who was recently elected City Mayor, was absent and will be sworn in later. Also absent was council-member elect Vanta Shafer. Meanwhile, longtime council member Marianna Keil, who presided over the meeting as Acting-Mayor in Bardarson’s absence, was chosen by the other council members to be the new Vice-Mayor, and was also sworn in to her new position.
It was a rather joyful occasion. Squires thanked those who had elected him, and promised to do his best to prove their trust in him. Keil, remembering her mother who had influenced her decision to go into politics, said she would have been proud to see her daughter today.
Four people have expressed an interested in running for Bardarson’s remaining one-year council term. They include Robert Thomas, Tim McDonald, John French and Dale Butts. The deadline to apply is November 1st.
