Folks along the north end of Fifth and Sixth Avenue have no doubt noticed several people with binoculars wandering around the past two days, scanning the Mt Ash trees and cottonwoods. What are they doing???
It’s another very unusual bird. This one was spotted on Monday by Jen Linkhart. She had the presence of mind to grab her camera and take several photos before it flew off. The photos verified her guess of Western Tanager, a yellow bird with wing bars that should not be here.
Once the news got out, local birders have been scouring the trees for a glimpse of this rare visitor. A few alert homeowners and some birders have been lucky to get a “Life Bird”, one they have never seen before. Even those who did not yet see it were treated to scores of migrating Robins and Varied Thrushes gobbling down Mt Ash berries, and several other migrating species. It’s an amazing and beautiful sight!
