Seward Chamber of Commerce Press Release
Rich Taro, the winner of the 2013 Seward Silver Salmon Derby

As the Seward Silver Salmon Derby came to an end on Sunday August 18th, eager anglers  gathered at the Breeze Inn Lobby for the 58th Annual Seward Silver Salmon Derby Awards.

Rich Taro from Anchorage, AK was fishing on the Florette C when he reeled up the 3rd largest fish to be recorded and turned in during the Seward Silver Salmon Derby. His 21.25 lb Silver salmon took first place in the derby earning him $10,000!

2013’s numbers reflect not only more visitors but bigger fish than the last 2 years. A whopping 21,000 pounds of fish were weighed during this year’s silver salmon derby, dwarfing the 14,000 turned in, in 2012.

Average weight of silvers turned in:

2013- 9.5 lb

2012- 8.47 lb

2011- 7.67 lb

The Seward Chamber of Commerce has reportedly already started discussing the purchase of smolt, and other fish restoration projects to be started this fall.
