Thankful for friends, family, and the community of Seward

To My Dear Friends,

Words cannot express the gratitude that my family and I feel for the tremendous outpouring of help and support that has been provided us after the loss of my son Matthew Cole Byars. My family was astounded by the phenomenal response from Matt’s hometown and were amazed by the number of Matthew’s friends who came from near and far to be here for him. This really helped us see the impact Matt made on the lives of others.

Though I may never know each individual act of pure charity and kindness performed during these trying times, the love that you showed will leave a mark on my family’s and my heart forever.

Many of you made loving contributions in the form of food, flowers, lodging for out of town guests, photos, monetary donations and behind the scenes work that helped make my son Matthew’s service flow smoothly and memorably. As Deacon Felix Maguire put it, “We gave him a good send-off!” This is no faint praise from an Irish clergyman. We never would have felt that blessing without all of you.

I also want to thank all who made contributions in Matt’s name to the Nature Conservancy or the Resurrection Bay Conservation Alliance. Matthew loved open places and wild spaces.

With loving thanks and gratitude,

Cathy Byars
