Cedar & Sam Strike Again

Cedar Bourgeois and Sam Young traveled to the Muir Beach Race in California to test their mettle against some new competition on November 14, 2009 Sam would run the 17K while Cedar ran the 33K. It was the longest race that Cedar had ever entered, but she felt confident that she could do it in that she had run the Lost Lake race. The days preceding the race were warm & sunny, but the morning of the race dawned foggy & cool. This was perfect for a couple of Alaskans not used to California climate.
The race was a hilly, scenic series of loops that climb from the ocean at Muir Beach and follow the coastal trail south. Although the hills were probably no more than a thousand feet, the total climbing for the race was 4390 feet. As Cedar crossed the finish line the timers stood with gaping faces and then double checked their watches. Who was this girl from Alaska anyway? Then they waited for the next woman to finish. They waited, and waited, and waited…. Finally the next woman arrived, 47 minutes behind our champion from Seward. Not only had she won the race, but her time of 2:51:48 was 8 minutes faster than the course record which had stood for 11 years.
Not to be outdone. Sam won the race for his age division and placed second overall with a time of 1:28:08, only 10 seconds behind the winner. This left the Californian racers wondering what we fed these Alaskans to make them fly so.
