Letter to Seward City Council

Dear City Council Member,
May I respectively remind you that America was founded on the premise of representation by the people and for the people, not representation of the government to promote more government and higher assessments on the people.
As elected council member you have a solemn duty to represent the will of citizens of Seward and not any special interests. I am a 25-year resident of Seward and one who dearly loves this little town. I would respectively request you, as my representative on the council, fight against any percentage increase in our utility bills. Before any increases are put on the shoulders of the people of Seward, we need to first look at trimming the administrative cost of the utility.
These proposed increases will make it harder for me, my children and other families to afford to live here in Seward. Our population has already taken a pretty good hit. The city has had a windfall from taxes on heating oil and gasoline taxes while the citizens of Seward have suffered under the burden of these oppressive taxes.
To say we have not had a utility increase since the 1993 study can not possibly be correct. In 1993 I had two teenage daughters at home and my utility bill ran about $120.00 per month. I live by myself now and have watched my electric consumption very closely. My bill is now $185.00 per month, despite extensive efforts to conserve on energy.
How can anyone justify these repressive increases when Seward has an excessive cash reserve on hand? There is absolutely no reason for these increases and if you and other members of our council can’t do something to curtail them, I believe we should elect someone who will.
Best regards,
Rose Mae Szymanski
