Dave Carey, Borough Mayor

Today’s unemployment figures from the State continue to shows the serious unemployment reality for the resident and taxpayers of the Kenai Peninsula Borough. At 10.9% average unemployment for 2009, the Kenai Peninsula Borough is averaging 2.5% higher than the average for 2008. This 10.9% rate of unemployment compares with 10.1% for the Mat-Su Borough and 6.9% for the Anchorage Borough. The average for the South Central region is 7.9%.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough will continue to promote economic development and jobs for local residents. Today’s data would indicate that this winter will be especially difficult for those on fixed incomes and those working in the lower-paying service sector. The Borough’s elimination of Sales Tax from groceries, which begins on September 1st and continues for 9 months, should promote some relief for those struggling with today’s economic reality.
