Short Break in Weather Assists Responders
with Flooding in Seward Areas

At high tide last night, the waters within the Seward area remained high, with minor flooding in low lying areas, while the rain has slowed overnight. Crews in the Box Canyon were able to reconstruct the Box Canyon levy and the waters have receded. Crews will begin reconstruction of Old Exit Glacier Road to put it back into place as early as tomorrow. With additional rain forecasted over the next 24 hours, we will continue monitoring the situation along with the City of Seward.

The flood waters started rising when a landslide occurred in the upper portion of Box Canyon and the levy was compromised. Crews worked to restore the levy and will work through tomorrow to finish the restoration of this levy.

The bridge going to Lowell Point continues to be impassable and transportation is compromised. City of Seward Crews and equipment are working to provide access. A water-taxi is being used to move residents within this area.

Residents are asked to be vigilant in obtaining information regarding flooding in their immediate areas, as there are still areas that may be comprised.

With the cooperation of the Kenai Peninsula School District, a Red Cross shelter has been established at Seward Middle School and will remain open as needed.
