My article this week is to tell you about what the seventh graders in Seward Middle School have been doing this week.
In Language Arts with Mr. Walker, who is also the principal of Seward Middle School, we have done a lot of reading. On Thursday we read a story called Barrio Boy, by Ernesto Galarza. It is about a Hispanic boy who moves to America from Mexico with his mother and the struggles he has while in the first grade. One struggle is learning how to speak and read English. He only speaks Spanish so this is quite hard for him. After we were done, we answered nine questions about the story. On Friday, we went over the questions we answered for the story Barrio Boy. On Monday we read a story called, I Am a Native of North America, by Chief Dan George. Chief Dan George is a North American Native. This is a story about how his life has changed by moving from his Indian village to a city, and how people act and live differently in the city than in his village. We read a short story called All Together Now, by Barbra Jordan on Tuesday. Barbra Jordan is a black woman who tries to put an end to racial division. Wednesday this week, we didn’t do very much. We went over the questions on the short story, All Together Now, by Barbra Jordan.
In Physical Education with Ms. Hammer, we did all sorts of things. On Thursday, we had D.A.R.E. (Drug, Abuse, Resist Education) with Officer Nickels. On Friday, we played pickle ball and Badminton. We did the same on Monday. The game of badminton is new to Seward Middle School. Mrs. Hammer just got the nets, birdies and rackets a few weeks ago. An interesting fact about badminton is that the birdies real name is a shuttlecock. Isn’t that funny? On Wednesday this week in Physical Education, we played badminton and pickle ball again.
In Social Studies with Mrs. Liljemark this week, we have been learning about a lot of philosophy. On Thursday, we read a handout on the production of silk. On Friday, we had a memorization test on the regions and bodies of water for the eastern part of China. We also had a four question on the production of silk handout that we read the night before. On Monday, we started writing a short story on fuedalism. Fuedalism is where your king gives you land if you promise to fight for him. We also read a few pages on the Zhou Dynasty. (It is pronounced, The Joe Dynasty). On Tuesday, we learned about the Mandate of Heaven and we learned about the great philosopher, Confucius. He believed that people should respect their superiors. On Wednesday, we learned about Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang are almost complete opposites. One big difference between them is that Yin is more feminine and Yang is more masculine.
In Math with Miss Fischer this week, we had a new addition in the classroom. We have a camera that projects our work on to the board. On Thursday, we used this new camera to project our Problem of the Week on the board. On Friday, we had a homework quiz which is questions from the homework throughout the week. On Monday we learned about percentages. We learned how to convert percentages to decimals and fractions on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we had a pop quiz on percentages, but in my own opinion, it wasn’t that hard.
In Science with Mr. Richards, on Thursday and Friday we went over the endocrine and nervous system. On Monday we learned about sexual reproduction. On Tuesday we took notes on sexual reproduction. On Wednesday we had a cross word puzzle to do on sexual reproduction.
Please read our articles every week. Because it is good to know what is going on with the seventh grade. We are quite an interesting group of kids.
