Young Fund Raiser Rattles Seward

When Don Young agreed to attend a private, machine-gun related fund raiser [Photos at www.dorenelorenz.blogspot.com] at the Lorenz-Lindsey property in Seward he seemed to have no idea who he was getting mixed up with.
This is Lorenz’s second Turkey Shoot, though first in the name of Young.
The first, at the same Nash Road property in 2006, featured Wayne Anthony Ross, former gubernatorial candidate and board member of the National Rifle Association.
The Shoot, held in a Seward suburb, startled pets and rattled nerves and windows miles away. Caught unaware, nearby neighbors called local police in alarm.
This, Lorenz’s second biennial event, attracted none other than our lone congressman as he seeks reelection.
The Turkey Shoot/ Don Young Fund raiser on Thursday night once again featured machine guns and explosive targets in a residential area with children and pets in the vicinity. This bombardment continued for three hours interrupting the relative peace of a summer evening in Seward.
The police line was kept busy for hours since Lorenz and Young made only trite attempts to forewarn the surrounding families.
Automatic rifle fire and explosives may be legal outside city limits, but it is obviously reckless and inconsiderate of one’s neighbors.
Young’s endorsement of this event illustrates the Congressman’s lack of consideration for non-donors and lack of judgment as from whom he accepts personal and campaign favors and contributions. With the FBI shaking down Alaska’s politicians and a Clean Elections measure gaining speed in the public mind, with ongoing questions about Lorenz-Lindsey family ties to Attorney Trevor McCabe, former Sen. Ted Stevens aide, in a deal that may have funneled Federal grants to buyout a failed real estate speculation, Young would benefit from cautious, considerate fund raising.
Anchorage got a free pig roast. Seward, a shootout. Pork, hot lead and money; vote for Don Young.

Lorenz has no sense of community, no understanding of the consequences of her behavior. Narcissism creates a protective shell through which common sense cannot penetrate. Despite supporting pre-indicted Don Young and supporting conservative values, her turkey shoot blasted the rights of nearby families to live peacefully and it harmed a small business nearby. She shares arrogance with with Don Young.

I am amazed how a simple, admittedly exuberant celebration of Things Alaskan can be distorted into a political diatribe filled to the brim with desperate inaccuracies.
Here come the Nanny Statists to chide us for being dangerous and unsafe, to make their shrill protests at actually seeing scary Alaskan Things happen in Alaska.
Certainly, there will always be those Treadwellian types who wish Alaska would become a sort of northern San Francisco, albeit with fewer residents and no baseball team; however, many of us realize how different Alaska really is, and just how close we are, with the help of those Nanny Statists, to becoming a perfect little replica of the places most of us came here to avoid.

Was Don the guest “Turkey” at this event?
Way to go Doreen, [Admin Note: Please express your opinion without personal attacks, text replaced] . Keep up the good work.

It wasn’t that bad, and is a truly Alaskan event. It was performed in an extremely safe manner with appropriate backstops and safety procedures in place. Reckless, no- granted it was loud, and could be heard just like a few obnoxious vehicles that need a new muffler. but in this case it was a lot of bark and no bite…

Doghouse, and all the other-
I am amazed at how the point of the article can be completely missed and distorted into a typical right wing radio talking point, “the nanny state.” There was no one complaining that the event was “dangerous and unsafe” the complaints were that it was extremely inconsiderate and shows that the people who put on the event have no regard for their neighbors or their community.
This wasn’t the same as a loud car driving by, it could be heard literally miles away destroying the peace and quiet that is one of the reasons people choose to live in the area.
There is nothing Alaskan about machine guns and explosives in a residential neighborhood. Sure we like our guns up and I admit it sounds kind of fun to shoot off a machine gun, but the truly Alaskan thing would have been to care about your neighbors and have a sense of community. Those are the things that I consider to be almost uniquely Alaskan, especially in a small town like Seward.

Dave’s right. Lorenz’s behavior disregarded the interests of her neighbors. I think respect for the well-being of a community is an Alaskan trait. Its certainly a Seward trait – look at the participation in the playground construction. Lorenz doesn’t understand that.

Pretty pitiful you taking a last jab aimed at Dale Lindsey for being associated with Trevor McCabe. Let the man rest in peace for God’s sake! What does that have to do with the turkey shoot? Dont you people have anything better to talk about??

Mark Luttrell, Dave (we all know who he is), Russ Maddox and … are not keen on American citizens having the right to the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution. The activity was certainly legal according to city and borough ordinances. Guys, just because you can’t handle a gun responsibly does not mean everyone else can’t.
By the way, next time Mark, Dave or anyone else throws a party, Keep your music and booze down. It does not take guns to disrupt a neighborhood.

Actually my response is still only in my mind and I haven’t put fingers to keys as of yet :)
As I have said and will say again, I firmly believe in the 2nd ammendment. I don’t have a problem with guns or their legal use (keep in mind that Michael Moore is also a life member of the NRA)
My problem, succinctly, with this event, is the location and notice. As a resident in a neighborhood, I shouldn’t have to comfort my terrified and crying 5 year old son who is worried that the soldiers he has seen on TV are coming to get him. I shouldn’t have to make multiple trips through my house to clean up the many piles of dog s**t because my 12 year old dog and 10 week old puppy are shivering under the table for 4 hours and refuse to go outside.
Just because something is legal, doesn’t mean that it should be done. For example, it is also legal for me to build a chemical factory in my front yard. It is legal for me to put a 100,000 watt light bulb facing my neighbors bedroom window. It is legal for me to have friends over and shoot squirrels, rabbits, and other small game and varmits at all hours and during all seasons. These are just things that neighbors don’t do. This is the definition of common courtesy.
People who are concerned about their neigbors are who made Alaska the ‘Great Land’. In an environment where for generations people have been dependent on their neighbors for survival, the concept of respect of community is the overarching defining aspect of the Alaskan personna. I find it almost humorous that others continue to state that this was an Alaskan event and that the sponsor was a true Alaskan. In the early days, before we had to worry about electricity, sewage systems, building codes, and property taxes, someone who treated her neighbors as this woman has would have never made it through the winter. She would have starved to death or if she did, would have been on the first boat out in the spring.
I moved to Alaska, from an urban area where people don’t care about one another. The only reason there is peace in New Jersey is because the police are watching with their hundreds of pages of laws, rules and regulations. In Alaska, we thankfully don’t have to rely on rules to dictate common sense. We care about our neighbors becuase we should, not because we are afraid they will have us arrested. Our neighbors are there to help us shovel a driveway, fix a roof, change a tire, share a jar of fresh canned berries or fish, or shelter us in time of emergency – That is the Alaskan way. What is NOT the Alaskan way is to treat your property as your own fiefdom and deny that things you do on it have effects on your neighbors.
All I want is common courtesy and basic respect. I show this to EVERYONE! – even people i truly disagree with. I do not think it is too much to expect the same in return. This is why I life here.

This piece had very much less to do with what took place at the Turkey shoot than with who sponsored and attended it.
However, In the scope of all things Alaskan, i.e. fishing, hunting, tourism, natural resource extraction, dog mushing, the Northern Lights, oil, hiking, camping, skiing, snowmachining, gold mining, kayaking, quality of life … I would say that machine-gun parties rank pretty low.
The one word Mr./Mrs. Reilly used in his/her comment that had anything to do with my mine, ‘political’, he/she completely forgot to address.
You keep your Second Amendment and I’ll keep mine; the First.

It is my understanding that the Seward News website is not to include personal vindictive attacks on individuals….but this article does not comply with those guidelines. It’s one thing to complain about a noisy neighborhood event, but to tie it in with the writer’s (Mr. Stigall) own personal biased opinions which he writes as “facts” to discredit another person does not line up with the purpose of this web service.

In case our silence may be perceived as condoning this event, it requires we comment. As neighbors across the road from this event:
• We were not informed of the planned event.
• The percussion of the exploding targets repeatedly shook our house and was very upsetting.
• It is unlawful anywhere in Alaska to disturb the peace and privacy of another with unreasonable noise, AS 11.61.110.
• We know of no immediate neighbors supporting this type of activity in our residential area.
• A more appropriate location is available at the Iron Mountain Shooting Club range.
