Kudos to the City Council (especially Council member Amberg) for nixing Mayor Clark Corbridge’s 800 number. We don’t need to spend tax dollars on an 800 number for a mayor to keep in touch with the community. If he really wants to keep in touch, he should live here.

1200 strong at the 49ers’ Ball!
Mon 28 Jan 2008 - Filed under: Alaska, Event — nye49ersball
Print Article - Comments (0)

The New Years’ Eve 49ers’ Ball is over, and after the clean-up comes the Thank You notes and the counting of the monies raised for ‘Something For Us’, a new Library Museum project. www.somethingforus.org

With Corporate sponsors, event ticket sales, the raffle and other donations, the event raised over $29,000. Some money is still coming in. After expenses are tallied, over $17,000 is profit toward the project! Thank you!

Turn out for the evening surpassed all expectations at approx. 1200 community members and visitors. Thank you for coming, we hope you all enjoyed the 49ers’ Ball as much as we did!

Advertising partners were Wells Fargo, Holiday Inn Express, Seward City News and the Alaska SeaLife Center. Corporate sponsors are Petro Marine Services, Seward Wildlife Cruises, and others. Thank you.

The Planning Committee would like to thank all the volunteers that came several days in a row to help make the 49ers’ Ball possible:

Twenty people worked Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday helping with decorations and set up. Thank you.

Heather and John Shank, designed the decorations with the balloons and personally inflated 4000 to 5000 balloons and directed the placement of them. We have never seen such a great transformation! Donation of the man lift by Resurrection Rentals and the volunteers that ‘went up’ (Jackie Campbell!) to hang the flags and the many balloons with Seward Ships’ donation of the helium for the event. Thank you.

Rosie Szymanski helped coordinate the pick-up and delivery of the tables and chairs needed with helpers, Paul Tougas, Dan and USCG, XO Mike Karnowski and friends the first day and two more days of pick up and one afternoon of deliveries back. How many tables and chairs did we use? They came from several directions, Seward High School, Seward Elementary, Elks, Seward Resort, Resurrection Road House, Alaska SeaLife Center to name most. In all 110 tables and 700 chairs were gathered for the evening! Thank you all very much for supporting this event and the community!

Volunteers during the event worked selling entrance tickets, Rotary members and others helped sell raffle tickets, helped with the pictures, cleaning of tables, coat checking, raffle drawing, security. Thank you.

The next day volunteers came again. Forty wonderful people came to help with the clean-up! In record time of about 2.5 hours the tables and chairs were being loaded for returning and a leaf blower was sending confetti across the floor. The man lift operator was chasing loose balloons across the ceiling and we were heading home. Thank you.

There is one person that we would like to thank personally for cooperating in anything, and we mean anything, that needed to be done for this event, Louie Bencardino. The Alaska Railroad Corporation has a great employee in Louie and our community is lucky to have him here. Louie was at the event everyday of set-up, all during the 49ers’ Ball, and at the clean up. The Alaska Railroad provided the terminal, snow plowing, heat and electric for this community event! Thank you.

Raffle prizes were donated by Royal Caribbean Cruises, Saltwater Safari, Sew and Bee Cozy, Resurrection Art, Kayak Adventures and Essential One. Thank you all.

The children’s area was run by the P.A.R.K.S. group, they did an awesome job and they were able to have their project displayed and supported at our event. Thank you.

Steve Lemme and friends donated their time and talents by providing music for the first two hours of the 49ers’ Ball. It was enjoyed by all. Steve was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening as well, thank you.

Afognak Logging saved the day with their sanding of the whole parking lot! Thank you.

The awesome guys that helped out at the beer garden entrance all night long, and the well run beer garden by The Pit Bar. Food vendors Cedar Bourgeois, Smoke Shack, Sean Carrington, Rome Travel Club who worked to prepare and provided the best food yet at a community event. Thank you.

There are a limited number of tiles available so if you wanted to paint one, nows the time to do it. Seward Community Playground, it’s not all kids’ play

playground-3d.jpg

With its build date less than four months away, the Seward Community Playground project is in more need than ever of donations of time, money and tools.

For people who would like to volunteer their time during the build, May 13-18 or during one of the many events Seward Community Playground will be part of up to the build, the project will need to fill three shifts per day - morning, noon and early evening - with 100 people per shift for the entire build. And that doesn’t even include daycare and food. So there is plenty of room for help.

And with all of these hundreds of volunteers come hundreds of hands that need tools to work.

Playground volunteers still need at least 12 wheelbarrows, 50 tape measures, two garden hoses, 60+ electric extension cords, electric drills, hammers and on and on. All donated tools will be secure and replaced if broken.

However, hundreds of volunteers and piles of tools will be nothing if Seward Community Playground volunteers can not raise the money needed to purchase the many components of the playground, swings, slides, lumber and nails. Over $80,000 has already been raised. But in the dozen or so weeks ahead, Playground volunteers will need to raise an additional $140,000 to meet the goal and build the playground Seward’s kids designed.

Look to pickets as an easy and memorable way to donate to the Playground project. Buy a picket in your family’s name through February 29.

For more information on how to volunteer or donate, please visit the Seward Community Playground website at www.sewardplayground.com.

Where is Clark?

It seems that maybe, just maybe the City Charter needs a modification. I live outside the city limits, but I work in town. I pay sales tax here, I pay utility costs here, I serve on one of the boards, my income is spent in the city at the local businesses, and I am effected by what our Esteemed Council decides to do…. We had Mr. Blatchford, he was not around much as he lived outside of town but remained qualified due to an address in Seward. Looks like Mr. Corbridge is doing the same. I don’t want to call CLARK on the phone in ANCHORAGE to discuss city business, I want to pass him on the street in our fine community and ask him if he has a minute. Seward needs a mayor that is HERE, IN THE COMMUNITY.

Here is what I am suggesting…Alter the city charter to allow all of us in the Seward Bowl (out to Primrose) to be elegible to run for any seat on the council and the boards and commissions that us “out of towners” are inelegible for. If you don’t like that idea go ahead and annex us. An absentee mayor is not what Seward needs.

Let me pose this question- Why was a fellow from out this way not allowed to run when he has the same elegibility as Corbridge or Blatchford? Where is our Mayor’s primary residence? Probably where he works. Seems like it was the same with the other mayor….. Is this selective elegibility? Can someone please educate me?

159 PM AST THU JAN 24 2008

…BLIZZARD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 5 AM AST FRIDAY FOR TURNAGAIN ARM AND PORTAGE VALLEY…

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ANCHORAGE HAS ISSUED A BLIZZARD WARNING…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 5 AM AST FRIDAY FOR TURNAGAIN ARM AND PORTAGE VALLEY.

A WEATHER FRONT APPROACHING FROM THE WEST WILL BRING SNOW AND INCREASE THE PRESSURE GRADIENT ACROSS TURNAGAIN ARM AND INTO PORTAGE VALLEY. SNOWFALL COMBINED WITH WINDS EXPECTED TO GUST BETWEEN 40 AND 50 MPH WILL PRODUCE BLOWING SNOW THAT WILL REDUCE VISIBILITIES TO ONE QUARTER MILE OR LESS IN TURNAGAIN ARM AND PORTAGE VALLEY THIS EVENING THROUGH EARLY FRIDAY MORNING. CONDITIONS SHOULD IMPROVE EARLY FRIDAY MORNING AS A LEE SIDE LOW DEVELOPS JUST SOUTH OF SEWARD AND RAPIDLY DECREASES THE PRESSURE GRADIENT AND THEREFORE THE WINDS.

A BLIZZARD WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. FALLING AND BLOWING SNOW WITH STRONG WINDS AND POOR VISIBILITIES ARE LIKELY. THIS WILL LEAD TO WHITE-OUT CONDITIONS…MAKING TRAVEL EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. ALL TRAVEL AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITY IS STRONGLY DISCOURAGED.

Letter of Concern
Thu 24 Jan 2008 - Filed under: Economics, Opinion — admin
Print Article - Comments (6)

Extreme environmental factions are restricting economic development and employment opportunities here on the Kenai Peninsula and throughout Alaska.

These groups have a propensity for placing roadblocks on business and development opportunities. In Seward, environmental investigation and impact statement requirements, have been aimed at business from the Alaska Railroad, Seward Ships, The Providence Hospital, Spring Creek Prison, The Fishing Industry, Tourist based businesses, City, State, Federal Agencies and the list goes on.

Do these people realize that Alaska has a resource based economy which has been managed well enough to finances our state government as well as provide every living resident with a Permanent Fund Dividend: which we now consider an entitlement.

Now the world is coming to an end because of global warming? This planet has seen many changes, just during my ¾ of a century life, and it will continue to change throughout time.

An ‘Economic Impact Department’ should be formed so that a community can counter some of the ridiculous environmental challenges and to determine how much of our tax payer dollars, time and energy should be directed towards issues beyond our ability to change.

Currently the contractor that is providing the dredging in the small boat harbor for the T-dock and bullhead repairs is being constantly harassed by one of the environmental activists to the point it is becoming a safety issue for the people preforming the work.

At a recent Council meeting allegations were made implying Seward Ship’s supposed pollution is responsible for incidents of cancer in the community. Contact with the State of Alaska Cancer Registry indicates that Seward has the same rate of cancer among our population as the rest of the state. There is no higher cancer rate here, but someone can imply there is even though that person is not a scientist.

Having been involved in marine related businesses for a good part of my life, I know ship building and marine trades are a difficult business. I am thankful that the community is prosing these industries because they attract business to the community: workers, passengers and tradesmen who buy local goods, stay in local hotels and generate payroll for people of the community who would not consider themselves marine related employees.

The coal dust issue with the railroad keeps the dock manager chasing problems that are climate focused complaints that are beyond our scope to resolve. After the 1964 earthquake, Seward had to really fight for the railroad to be restored and the dock to be replaced. After 44 years we are seeing more year round use of the railroad dock and the many improvements it now encompasses. The terminal building has been made available for many beneficial community events.

We as pro development people need to work together to ensure that the balance of power does not shift too far into the hands of these extreme environmental groups. Otherwise none of us will be allowed to live here; it will all be one big park open to no one.

Sincerely,

Margaret Anderson

Alaska College Goal Sunday
Thu 24 Jan 2008 - Filed under: Announcement, Education — admin
Print Article - Comments (0)

Only 5.8% of Alaska ninth graders get a college degree within 10 years, according to the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems. This puts Alaska last in the nation for higher education accomplishments. On the afternoon of February 10, 2008, the 4th annual Alaska College Goal Sunday will work to change that statistic. This year’s Alaska College Goal Sunday has grown to 20 locations in 18 communities across the state. It will reach a projected 1800 (?) students and family members with expert advice on completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

College Goal SundaySM is a national program designed to help students clear the paperwork and financial hurdles to higher education. It’s of particular importance to low-income and first generation college goers.

The FAFSA is the only way for students to access federal and most state support, including grants and low-interest loans. It is also required for many scholarships. However, completing the form correctly with detailed income, tax, and other information can be a difficult task. On Alaska College Goal Sunday, financial aid professionals from Alaska’s higher education institutions and the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education will help.

The program is sponsored by the Coalition of Alaskans Supporting Higher Education, a partnership of the Alaska Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education, the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) Education Consortium, and the University of Alaska.

Students and their families can prepare for Alaska College Goal Sunday by applying for a PIN at

www.fafsa.ed.gov, and reviewing required documents and other details at
www.alaskacollegegoalsunday.org.
2008 Alaska College Goal Sunday

The College Goal Sunday event for the central Peninsula will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 10 at the Soldotna Sports Center. The event will be held in Homer at the same time at KPC’s Kachemak Bay Campus East. For more information about the Soldotna event, contact Carrie Burford, KPC Financial Aid coordinator at 262-0331 or via email at incmb@uaa.alaska.edu . Mayor Corbridge announced his grand plans for Seward after the election in October. He stated in the Seward Phoenix Log article, “We’re looking for positive change that makes Seward a good place to live.” I guess that change hasn’t happened yet, since our Mr. Corbridge spends the majority of his time working and living in Anchorage.

His absence has been noted at the Alaska Municipal League, the Mayor’s Conference, the 49′ers Ball, and more local events. It is rumored that he will be present to greet Governor Palin when she comes to Seward to commemorate the Centennial of the Iditarod. Otherwise, (Vice) Mayor Dunham has been doing the honors of representing Seward as our ceremonial head.

Mr. Corbridge also said, “Nobody who supported me has asked for anything. They know me. They trust me. They trust my management style.” When you ask for nothing, it’s not hard to meet that expectation. As citizens of this community we have the right to have expectations of of elected officials. I think the very LEAST that can be expected is that the Mayor be accessible and participate in council meetings, work sessions and local events. If our statewide presence isn’t maintained, we cannot expect funding for those projects that require participation by our local officials.

Today, it was announced by the City Clerk that the Mayor can be reached in Anchorage via an 800#, paid for by the citizens of Seward.
