Question: When are studded tires prohibited?
Answer: From May 1st thru September 15th.
Operating with studded tires is a correctable ticket, which means that when issued a ticket for this offense, the operator has 10 days to bring the ticket and the vehicle to the police department and show that the studded tires have been removed. Failure to respond within the 10 days will cost you $50.00.
Do not wait until the last minute to get your tires changed over.

Seward, Alaska Sporadic Bird Report
Sunrise 6:17 am, sunset 9:36 pm, length of day 15 hours, 18 minutes; tomorrow will be 5 minutes and 22 seconds longer.
Weather: Just enough intermittent rain to get annoying spots and dots on the optics and require full raingear. Temperatures remain in the low to mid 40s, but it’s not freezing at night anymore, so the ice is quickly melting off lakes and ponds. Only the snow that was piled up in berms remains in town. Tender green iris shoots poke through the brown grass and brave crocuses flash their cheerful, surprising colors. I must plant more of these early bloomers!
This afternoon I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time and ready. Around 1:30, I watched about 120 SANDHILL CRANES wing their way steadily up Resurrection Bay towards me until they flew right overhead, calling excitedly. Their dark bodies made stitches across the sky in an ever-changing pattern until one bird became the leader of a loose V. They then decided not to land at the salt marsh pond, and flew over town towards the mountains. I thought they might fly over the Mount Marathon bowl, but instead they kept at about 1500 feet, flying over 4 mountain goats feeding in the alders on Mt Benson, and then went up the Resurrection River valley and out of sight.
A smaller group of about 40 geese, possibly GREATER WHITE FRONTED, followed a few minutes later but kept high and headed straight for the pass over the Resurrection River.
45 minutes later, the numbers were reversed and about 100 geese led about 40 cranes alongside the mountains and through the pass. Keep your eyes and ear towards the sky and you may be lucky too!

I would like to thank the many people who supported the “Seward Monthly Winter Film Fest”. It was in my eyes a great success. Our goal was to have local folks share their experiences in the great outdoors via slides, digital images & movies with other who enjoy the same type of life style.
The original format plan was to have a showing every second Tuesday of every month from November through April. And for the most part we pulled that off, with of course a few exception. First of all on the second month (December) I had to move the showing up to the third Tuesday which turned out to be a bad idea because folks turn out on the second Tuesday only to find no one was there. Lesson learned, always try and keep your schedule and never change something at the beginning. The second exception was the last showing (April),I tried real hard to pull that off but I just couldn’t get anyone to commit during that time frame and I wasn’t about to change the time again.
I’m hoping next year I will have folks lined up to fill all the time slots, but I doubt it so I sure could use your help, if you or someone you know has a slide show or a short movie of an outdoor experience please call or email me.
Why a slide show and why in the winter, to most this question does not need to be explained, but for the other just this;

April 20, 2007 Happy Earth Day!
Seward, Alaska Sporadic Bird Report
Sunrise 6:26 am, sunset 9:28 pm, length of day 15 hours, 2 minutes; tomorrow will be 5 minutes and 25 seconds longer.
Weather: April continues to be moody, even while melting the snow in town down to a few stubborn remnants, she has freshened up the snow on the surrounding mountains. Gray clouds continue to sweep overhead with intermittent rain, sprinkles, and dashes of sunshine. Fortunately, it has remained fairly calm. The temperatures have crept up to the high 30s and low 40s, and some freshwater lakes and ponds are at least partially open for the water birds.
The bears are out and about so it’s time to take down the birdfeeders and clean up the yard to keep them from becoming nuisance bears. Time too, to clean out the old nests and debris from the birdhouses in preparation for the swallows’ return. Rubbing the inside top of the birdhouse with bar soap will help discourage paper wasps from invading the box. Please remove any perches, extended bases, or other handy footholds that only make it all too easy for magpies and jays to raid the nest box to dine on baby birds.
April 19: Bear Lake residents reported a small flock of SNOW GEESE standing around on the ice, wondering if they were in the right place. A few were heard passing overhead but not landing. A EURASIAN WIGEON male is still at the saltmarsh pond, which is about half open. PINTAILS, GADWALL, MALLARDS, and COMMON MERGANSERS, swim, feed, and rest nearby.
