Seward Community Schools is looking for a few good people who love to view art and who would like to participate in our judging night at the Seward High School Auditorium. Judges will pick the best art for the Avy Savvy Poster contest on Thursday March 1, 5:30 p.m.
The contest will feature a variety of art materials used in these posters from local kids, including but not limited to; crayons, pencils, watercolor, poster paints and more.
We are also looking for local businesses to display the kids’ poster art during the month of March. And if you wish to donate items for second- and third-place winners, the kids would be thrilled.
Remember: art creates happiness and wellness in a person, especially in children. Let’s inspire them to do their best and we may learn more from their point of view.
Please contact Community Schools no later then Tuesday, Feb. 27.

Question: A couple of years ago, I took an online defensive driving class and was reminded of a rule that a LOT of people violate; that you’re not allowed to pass more than one vehicle at a time on the highway.
Answer: You must have been advised of a “rule” of safe driving, not the law. According to Alaska Law 13 AAC 02.065(a)(b) Overtaking a Vehicle on the Left – Limitations: The overtaking vehicle must do so at a safe distance, in an area of the highway where passing is allowed, may not return to its right lane until safely clear of the overtaken vehicle, and must be back in its right lane before coming within 200 feet of oncoming traffic. Passing does not excuse speeding and directional signals should be used.

We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday the evening of March 2. There will be a hot dog dinner, put on by the Boys and Girls Club, games in the gym and a book fair in the library. It would be of great help if volunteers could help at the book fair that evening. It will be open to the public from 5:00 to 7:00. If volunteers work ½ hour shifts we would need at least four people. Thanks Daphne Honn
Please e-mail Daphne dhonn@kpbsd.k12.ak.us if you can help with the book fair in the Seward Elementary School library.

Seward PTSA is budgeted to send two adult members and a high school student member to Juneau to participate in the Alaska PTA Legislative Fly-in February 21 & 22. Usually, we fly to Juneau on the 20th with our return flight on the 22nd. We pack our two days with lobbying legislators for the Alaska PTA priorities (includes modification of the cost differential to provide adequate funding for all schools) using Seward schools as our personal examples.
We are seeking an Alaska Airlines companion coupon - If your Alaska Airlines card expires in February 07 & you have not used & do not plan to use your on-line companion certificate before it the end of February, we’re hoping you’ll help us lower our costs. Please contact us!
A second adult participant - One of our esteemed Seward Elementary teachers has volunteered to give up his personal leave to attend. We do have a couple back-up participants who have attended on previous fly-ins, but if anyone else would like the opportunity to accompany Bob Barnwell and advocate for our schools in Juneau, please let us know. The legislators in Juneau hold the purse strings! The adult participants are also responsible for the Seward High student council representative if they choose to send one. Having a student representative accompany you to Juneau is a delight and reminds our legislators of what it’s all about & why we bother.
If you have any of the items below available for the students to use, please e-mail sjonsson@kpbsd.k12.ak.us or give him a call.
Please also attend the community meeting called by the Seward High principal at 6pm Tuesday February 13 in the Seward High Library or Theater. Again, whether you have kids or not, this is an important meeting. With the proposed district budget reducing Seward High teaching staff to eight, we are going to lose great teachers like Scott Jonsson and the programs they provide, like art! We have to come together to find a solution for our kids. A quality education system is also essential to our local economy.
Drama students are looking for the following props to be donated
- Rocking chair
- Desk (administrative style)
- Arm chair
- Sofa
- Coffee table
