Late in September of 2006, Sgt. Keenan Williams and his wife Lori, along with six other soldiers and their families, traveled to our community for a weekend of fun and relaxation before being deployed to Iraq. Their trip was made possible by the graciousness and generosity of several Seward organizations and many individuals. Our expression of gratitude to the people of this community is long overdue.
Several organizations and individuals made monetary donations:
The American Legion Post #5, the Ladies Auxiliary, the Legion Riders, Alaska’s Point of View and the Seward Police Association, Thank You!
American Legion Members and their Guests attending the dinner, Employees of Ace Hardware, Spenard Builders, Seward Police Dept, Seward Public Works Dept, and Providence Seward Medical and Care Center. Thank You!
Other donations included: Housing, supplied by Scott at the Seward Resort. Free passes to the Alaska Sealife Center thanks to Carl, Nancy and Tylan. Geri arranged a KFT cruise. Alan and Tina took photos, Phyllis made brownies and Roger and Pinky brought the cake. The American Legion hosted their dinner and Brother Emmanuel offered the blessing. Several community members came, shook hands and thanked these soldiers for their service to our country.
It is with deep regret that I tell you; a roadside bomb killed one of these soldiers, Sgt. Sean Fennerty, “Fen”, on Saturday, 20 January 2007.
Seward welcomed these Patriots with open arms, and gave everyone of us precious memories. Keenan is proud of his hometown with good reason.
Many thanks to all of you for your generosity and show of support for these brave Americans.
Sincerely,
Jim and Betty Gilmore
Seward, Alaska, January 25, 2007— The Board of Directors for the Seward Chamber of Commerce, Conference and Visitors Bureau, opened the application period for the 80th Annual Mount Marathon Race® earlier this month.
Runners hoping to race in 2007 must submit their completed application by March 31, 2007. Applications may be completed online at www.seward.com. Application fees are $45 for adults and $20 for juniors. Veterans and 2006 finishers have priority, with the remaining slots filled through a lottery system. Lottery results will be announced by April 16, 2007.
The now famous, or infamous, foot race is a climb and descent on Mount Marathon – a mile and a half up and a mile and a half down, complete with cliffs, waterfalls, and wonderful view. Over the years, participation has increased steadily, resulting in new milestones. 54 women finished the first-ever women’s race in 1985, and 2005 heralded the beginning of the “wave start” to accommodate more participants.

Pet of the Week: “
Gouda” is one of the many wonderful cats awaiting new homes at the shelter. She is a gentle 8-mo old spayed female who loves affection and cat nip mice.
Wish List: We are desperate for cat homes. Please adopt your next furry friend and please do not let your cats breed- there are not enough life long homes to go around- everyone wants a kitten, but they grow up and many end up at the shelter or on the street.
